The First Set of Readings

“Viewing American class Divisions through Facebook and Myspace” Reading

In this essay, the author talks about Myspace, and Facebook. He highlights that there are 2 types of social classes that use these social networking sites. the hegemonics for Myspace and subaltern for Facebook. He talks about how Myspace is for the bad kids who are poor and wont go to college unlike the good kids who go to college and are on Facebook.

Do you agree that there is a true difference between the people who use Myspace and Facebook, and if so what do you think is the main reason why our society has split up into 2 different social networking sites?

“Social Network Sites: Public, Private, or What?” Reading

In todays society, almost everything is open to the public. Whatever we want to do on the Internet through social networking sites, or even look at a website is all open to the public. We all want our lives to be private, and express what we want when we want. Our parents always want to control what their children see through there eyes because they dont know how it will affect them.

Do you think the youth see `s too much stuff on the internet that they are not ready to understand?

Are you okay with how most of the stuff we look at on the computer through the internet is open to the public eye?

“Friend Game” Reading

A very sad story about a young girl who killed herself. This story shows you how free the internet is, and how you can basically create what you want. This girl was only 13 years old too. The guy she was talking to wasnt even real, he was just a fake person that the neighbotrs created. This goes to show you almost anything can happen through the internet.

Do you think there should be an age limit to use a social networking site such as 17 and up?

How do you feel about creating fake people on social networking sites?

“Here I am Taking My Own Picture” Reading

On most social networking sites today, peoples profiles have a self-portrait that shows the world who they are. All of these pictures were thought out in a blink of an eye, and were taken by new advanced digital cameras. These pictures can have all different poses, the person can be all dressed, and basically just capture a moment. Like the article said, some of these ideas come from celebrities and the way they express themselves. All of these pictures they take usually end up on Facebook or Myspace in the end.

Are you for people posting tons of pictures online in Facebook that could get into the wrong hands?

Do you think celebrities influence the way we look, and the things we do through photography?

I do not think that there is a division between myspace users and facebook users in terms of good and bad people. Or poor and wealthy. I never heard of anything like that before and never noticed it either.

I do think the youth sees some things they probably shouldn’t be seeing, but it is a part of growing up. They learn from what they see. Those things aren’t going to jump right infront of them. They are looking for something to learn about it.
I definitely do not like the idea that my information on facebook can be seen by more people than I originally thought. I know facebook has a right to do whatever it wants with our private information. I wish only my friends can see my information.

I think there should be no fake people on these websites. They need to find a way to prove the user is real. I think these sites should also enforce the age limits. I am not entirely sure how, but 12 year old girls shouldn’t be going on these sites.

I think the only pictures that should be posted on facebook are personally selected ones so that you do stay out of trouble and those pictures never get into the wrong hands. Pictures are a big part of facebook these days.
Celebrities definitely have a huge influence on the way people behave. Most people look up to them and try to emulate them.
